The Foundry Building

The mammoth stone building, originally used for smelting and casting iron and steel, was constructed in 1870. The Foundry has many additions, mostly dating from the 1880s and 1890s. The additions housed cupolas (large furnaces for melting iron and steel) as well as a small brass foundry and spaces for constructing patterns, forming molds, and cleaning castings.

This 50,000 square foot building is home to artists including Gutierrez Studios, Corradetti Glass Studio, and Woodberry Kitchen.

The Poole & Hunt Building

Constructed in 1856, the Poole and Hunt Building is the oldest surviving building in the Clipper Mill complex. This stone building originally housed a blacksmith shop for manufacture of wrought iron products. In addition, the Poole and Hunt Building housed the millwright’s office. The millwright designed and oversaw construction of buildings on the site. The 3-story, brownstone and brick office with its copper cupola was constructed in 1905 and served as the eastern gateway to Clipper Mill. In addition to company managers, the office provided work space for the engineers and draftsmen who designed castings, machine parts, and machinery used on the site.

The Stables Building

The quaint, stone Stables Building was constructed in 1890 to house the horses and wagons needed to move products among the buildings and the spur of the Northern Central Railroad that served the complex.

This 7,500 square foot building is home to Biohabitats, a company dedicated to ecological restoration.

The Assembly Building

The magnificent brick and stone Assembly Building was constructed in 1890 for the assembly of large machines. Originally, the Assembly Building has a clear interior height of 80 feet. This soaring space reflects the enormity of the machines Poole & Hunt was able to manufacture. During the early 20th century a 65-foot, 500 ton sand wheel (the largest in the world at the time) was assembled in the building. Badly damaged by fire in 1995, the Assembly Building was only a shell when Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse acquired it.

This renovated building houses 36 one- and two-bedroom, loft-style apartments, built within the shell of the original building with an open air courtyard in the middle. The first floor has 10,000 square feet of office and retail space.
